One of the twin sons of the warlord Xiao Zonghai of Longcheng was abducted by bandits and fell off a cliff, where he was found and raised by Old Man Shi, leading to his separation from the Xiao family. Many years later, the puppet government of Wang Jingwei was established in Nanjing, and the puppet forces launched a sweep of Shijia Village, killing Old Man Shi. The grown-up child, Shi Shanzhai, decided to avenge his father and joined the New Fourth Army. Colonel Liu Xiuchun of the New Fourth Army asked Shi Shanzhai to impersonate his doppelgänger, the weak-willed puppet collaborator Xiao Jiuchuan, to infiltrate the Xiao family and uncover the secret plans of the puppet commander, General Huang. The rough-and-ready grassroots ruffian Shi Shanzhai overcame numerous difficulties to gain the trust of the Xiao family through his exceptional wit and courage, getting close to the cunning and treacherous General Huang and uncovering the secret of the Japanese plan to launch a biological warfare attack. At a critical moment of national peril, Shi Shanzhai accidentally reunites with the Xiao family and convinces them to join the anti-Japanese cause. He leads his comrades and the people of Longcheng in a clever operation to seize Longcheng, thwarting the puppet forces' plan to occupy Chongqing and establish a biological warfare laboratory. After a series of struggles, Shi Shanzhai grows from a grassroots ruffian into a resourceful New Fourth Army commander and becomes a true anti-Japanese hero.
