Chen Jichang (played by Liao Weixiong) considers himself to be both talented and handsome, leading a life of promiscuity and indulgence. His friend Su Dongpo (played by Lin Jiadong) falls in love with a beautiful woman named Lu Xiaodie (played by Fu Mingxian). To help his friend's romance, Chen Jichang offers to come up with a plan for Su Dongpo. Chen Jichang notices that Xiaodie is often accompanied by a maid named Liu Yue'e (played by Guan Yonghe). He decides to adopt a circuitous strategy and first tries to build a relationship with Yue'e. Yue'e, with her strong-willed personality, looks down on Chen Jichang's decadent ways. However, as time passes, Chen Jichang's persistence gradually wins Yue'e over, and their relationship grows closer, eventually leading to marriage. After their wedding, Chen Jichang is shocked by Yue'e's "tyrannical and unreasonable" behavior. The heavy oppression, coupled with Su Dongpo's incitement, leads Chen Jichang to transfer his affections to another, falling in love with a famous courtesan.
