The series premiered on January 9, 2000, and concluded on May 14, 2006, after seven seasons, spanning a total of six and a half years. The main character is Malcolm (played by Frankie Muniz), the third of four brothers (five after the birth of Randall in Season 5). His parents are Hal (played by Bryan Cranston) and Lois (played by Jane Kaczmarek). The eldest son, Francis (played by Christopher Masterson), is away studying at a military academy, while Reese (played by Justin Berfield), Malcolm, and Dewey (played by Erik Per Sullivan) remain at home. Malcolm is the middle child among the three brothers, which is reflected in the title of the show ("Malcolm in the Middle" literally translates to "Malcolm in the Middle").
