The Ma brothers from Pen'er Hutong used to live a happy and carefree life like other children. However, the death of their parents in a car accident ended their ordinary days. On his deathbed, their father left a final message: "Study well." The four brothers survive on welfare. The words "study well" become a phrase that the eldest brother, Ma Xuewu (played by Zhang Jiayi), always keeps in mind. To support the family and his younger brothers, he has to give up schooling and go to work at a factory. Among the brothers, the second brother, Ma Xuejun (played by Deng Chao), is the most troublesome. He seems to have endless mischief and always acts on impulse, causing a lot of trouble. The family's difficulties force the eldest brother to send the sick youngest brother to live with relatives. The four brothers grow up in poverty, and their different personalities lead them down completely different paths. They experience different lives, witness the changes of the times, but share the same setbacks and difficulties, as well as the unchanging fact that they are brothers. This drama, along with "Halfway Marriage" and "Dear Brothers," is collectively known as the "Three Plays of Family Affection."
