Legend has it that in ancient times, every great mountain and body of water was guarded by a guardian spirit. The guardian deity of Jirisan Mountain was Gyuyeo (played by Choi Jin-hyuk), who fell in love with the female protagonist of a human event, Yun Seohwa (played by Lee Hyun-woo). So captivated was Gyuyeo that he was willing to give up his eternal life to become human. To achieve this, Gyuyeo had to abide by three stipulations outlined in the Nine Families' Book. However, due to an accident, Gyuyeo failed to follow the rules and was forced to leave Seohwa and their newly born child. Seohwa abandoned her son in the river, where he was adopted by a wealthy merchant, Park Mu-sae, and grew up to become the impulsive and curious Choi Kang-ji (played by Lee Seung-gi). On the other side, Taem-yu (played by Bae Suzy), the instructor at theInvisible Sword Hall (Immyeongdo-gwan), who was dissatisfied with the societal definition of women and desired to live life on her own terms, met Kang-ji during an investigation. Taem-yu developed a sense of compassion for Kang-ji, and the two gradually fell in love through a series of events. Half-human and half-beast, Kang-ji searches for a way to become fully human through a series of events, and in the process, he gains courage, love, and strength.
