Christopher (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) is a noble gentleman who adheres to the traditional morals of the chivalric era, embodying integrity, patience, and self-discipline. Sylvia (played by Rebecca Hall), on the other hand, is a typical socialite with numerous lovers, living a life of indulgence and extravagance. However, an unexpected pregnancy forces her to marry the conservative Christopher in order to save her reputation. The monotonous married life and her husband's cold, reserved demeanor drive Sylvia to the brink of madness. She begins to use every means possible to provoke Christopher. Sylvia's elopement with her old lover marks the beginning of their marital conflicts. However, their religious beliefs prevent them from divorcing. Thus, this strained marriage plunges both of them into endless torment. By chance, Christopher meets Valentin (played by Adelaide Clemens), a modern, intellectually profound, and radical woman. As they get to know each other better, these two seemingly from different worlds fall in love. Yet, societal constraints hinder the development of their relationship. Meanwhile, Sylvia becomes aware of the crisis in their marriage and begins to rein in her lifestyle, making efforts to save the marriage and show affection to her husband. The outbreak of World War I, with Christopher joining the military, puts this love triangle to the test and forces them to make difficult choices. This film is adapted from Ford Madox Ford's novel of the same name.
