On this day in Yangzhou, two young women were getting married simultaneously. One was Du Bingyan (played by Li Lin), the daughter of a wealthy merchant in the city, and the other was Li Yuhu (played by Huang Yi), the daughter of a martial arts master. Both of the young women seemed to have marriages that others would envy, but the bitterness of their situations was known only to them. Bingyan was to marry Qi Tianlei (played by Nie Yuan), the third son of a wealthy merchant family in Liuzhou, while Yuhu was to marry Yuan Buqu (played by Shi Xiaohong), a prominent general of the court. However, Tianlei was weak and sickly, and the marriage was rushed to ward off bad luck. Yuan Buqu, on the other hand, had endured much hardship in the Li family and had decided to marry Yuhu as a form of revenge. Just as the two young women were quietly shedding tears in their wedding carriages, a heavy downpour began. Both wedding processions sought shelter in the same temple. When the rain stopped, theCoolies (carriers) mistakenly swapped the carriages! Thus, two extraordinary and convoluted marriages began.
