In the early years of the Republic of China, the century-old pharmacy Shangchuntang was renowned in Foshan for its expertise. The renowned doctor Du Shen (played by Du Yanyan) managed Shangchuntang, gaining fame far and wide. Du Shen had no sons, but his only daughter, Du Ji qi (played by Zhong Ji'an), was exceptionally intelligent. Growing up under her father's influence, she became well-versed in pharmacology and developed a compassionate heart, eager to help others. Ji qi was about to marry Zhuang Jizhu, the eldest son of the mayor of Foshan, and this union of equals was celebrated as a great match in the city. As their wedding approached, Ji qi, disregarding pre-wedding taboos, rushed with Jizhu to the slum area of Jin Yuli to prevent the poor from using rats in their medicine. The unscrupulous trader Ding Yiyuan (played by Chen Zhanpeng), known for his shrewdness, happened to meet the kind-hearted Ji qi and helped her retrieve her stolen wedding necklace. Little did they know, after returning home, Jizhu fell ill, as did many other residents of the city, all infected with the spring plague. To avoid delaying the wedding, Du Shen took a great risk to develop a potent medicine called "Jiujiu Zhengqi Pills" and distributed them for free to the public to treat the plague. During this time, Ji qi gradually discovered that the carefree Ding Yiyuan was actually a man of deep affection and respect, and she began to admire him. On the eve of their wedding, Jizhu passed away from his illness, leaving Zhuang Dunru, the mayor and Jizhu's father, devastated. In his grief, Dunru not only sealed Shangchuntang but also had Du Shen imprisoned. Zhuang Jizong (played by Huang Haoran), Dunru's second son who had returned from studying abroad to attend his elder brother's wedding, was shocked by this news. Full of youthful vigor, Jizong was determined to uncover the truth and restore the Du family's good name.
