The show is adapted from the exposure of a Russian spy network in 2010, and the creator himself served as a CIA agent from 1990 to 1994. Shortly after Ronald Reagan was elected as the President of the United States during the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union, a pair of Soviet KGB spies, following orders from their superiors, infiltrated the suburbs of the US capital, Washington D.C., to gather military and political intelligence. They disguised themselves as an American family — the husband Philip (played by Matthew Rhys), the wife Elizabeth (played by Keri Russell), and their two children who were unaware of their true identities: a 13-year-old daughter Paige (played by Holly Taylor) and a 10-year-old son Henry. FBI agent Stan (played by Noah Emmerich) posed as a civilian and moved into their neighboring house to investigate them. At the same time, their relationship became increasingly intimate and sincere as time went on, but the escalation of the Cold War and the continued attention and surveillance from the spy organization were testing their emotions. More importantly, Philip was increasingly adapting to American values and ways of thinking.
