In the 1970s, Tong Lin, who had been unable to find a partner due to his inability to speak, found an infant girl at his doorstep. Though he couldn't speak, Tong Lin, with his inherently kind nature, decided to adopt the baby girl and named her "Amei." Due to Amei, Tong Lin's sister Tong Yan, who had returned from the countryside without a job, teased him, causing him to give up his job and house. Tong Lin then moved out with Amei, renting a place elsewhere and making a living by collecting scrap, relying on his meager income to raise Amei alone. The happiest time for the father-daughter duo each day was when Tong Lin would play the old instruments he had collected for Amei. Amei would always become excited and dance with joy, which was also Tong Lin's most joyful moment. During the college entrance examination, the teacher suggested that Amei apply to a music school. However, due to the high tuition fees, Amei refused out of unwillingness to add to her father's burden. Upon learning this, Tong Lin, considering Amei's future, decided to enroll her himself and secretly took on more jobs. When Amei achieved success in her studies, Tong Lin, however, had developed cancer due to years of hard work. Deeply moved by her gratitude, Amei sang "If You're Thirsty, Sell Me" for her father Tong Lin.
