"War of Flowers" is set against the backdrop of ancient Korea, recounting the tragic history of women under the cruel feudal system. It provides a comprehensive depiction of the social landscape of ancient Korea. The life of the female protagonist, Gi-rye, can be roughly divided into four historical stages: the daughter of a declining official family, a young widow, a servant in an official household, and the wife of an official. Regardless of her identity, her tragic fate remains consistent throughout. The feudal society's cruel oppression of Gi-rye is primarily manifested in the physical abuse she endures. In traditional feudal society, Confucian ideology imposed the "chastity" label on women, leaving them no room for redemption. Their spirits and bodies were completely controlled, and when they tried to break free, they faced the threat of death. Gi-rye's freedom in matters of sexuality is mainly reflected during her time as the wife of a laborer at the bottom of society. When she re-enters the official household, her body is once again subjected to abuse, and she is even killed by her former beloved husband. "War of Flowers" uses a meticulously crafted story and vivid colors to depict the protagonist's tragic and beautiful life, exposing the oppressive Confucian ideology that stifles women's spiritual and physical freedom. The film's critical spirit remains commendable even today and holds strong guiding significance. (BD)
