The protagonist, Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler), is a mid-level official in the "Parks and Recreation Department" of Pawnee, Indiana. To beautify her hometown, Leslie embarks on what seems to be a simple plan: helping nurse Ann Perkins (played by Rashida Jones) transform a vacant lot (a deep pit) into a community park. Leslie's colleague, Tom Haverford (played by Aziz Ansari), is a self-serving opportunist who often undermines Leslie's efforts. Leslie's superior, Ron Swanson (played by Nick Offerman), is a high-ranking official but a staunch anarchist whose views and actions create significant obstacles for Leslie. City planner Mark Brendanawicz (played by Paul Schneider) firmly supports Leslie, but 15 years of public service have soured his temperament and outlook on the future. Leslie hopes to inspire university intern April (played by Aubrey Plaza) and her generation through her own success. She has a long-term goal she has never shared with anyone: she is determined to become the first female president in American history.
