The film tells the story of Zhu Xiaolian, the first painter of Jiangnan, who enters the world of the painted wall inhabited by demons through an ancient temple mural. He meets the first woman, Wei Sheng, who wants to paint his portrait herself. However, he unwittingly disrupts the crow demon's plot. While fighting against the crow demon alongside Wei Sheng, they fall in love. He later discovers that Wei Sheng's true form is that of a Phoenix deity. The only way to defeat the crow demon is for him to sacrifice himself to help Wei Sheng achieve rebirth. Can the two ultimately defeat evil and live happily ever after?
