Two sisters, Victoria DiSano (Megan Charpentier) and Lily DiSano (Isabelle Nélisse), are found in a forest five years after their mother was killed by their father, who then committed suicide and abandoned them. When discovered, they are in poor condition, isolated, and starving. They are terrified and resistant to any physical contact, and no one knows how they survived in such isolation. Their uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend Anna Belle (Jessica Chastain) adopt them, disrupting their previously peaceful lives. In the darkness, a ghostly figure follows them, and this ghost, intent on killing them, is called "Mom" by the two girls. This film is the feature film debut of Spanish director Andrés Muschietti, based on his 2008 short film of the same name.
