North America is destroyed after a great war, and people establish new homes on the ruins of the former United States. However, the new regime mandates that the 12 districts under its jurisdiction must annually send young men and women as tributes to participate in a televised live event called "The Hunger Games." The rules are simple: kill or be killed. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take her sister's place when her sister is chosen for the 12th district's "Reaping." Katniss must leave her love Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) behind and join Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), who is also selected from the 12th district, to enter the games. Although Katniss has grown up hunting and possesses exceptional archery skills, allowing her to handle the various obstacles in the game with ease, she must navigate the brutal and formidable competitors from other districts. To become the ultimate winner, she must transform into a ruthless killing machine, which poses a significant challenge for her. "The Hunger Games" is the first book in a trilogy of young adult science fiction novels by American author Suzanne Collins, with the other two books titled "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay."
