Alithea Binnie was generally content with her life, but she harbored a skeptical attitude toward the world. In Istanbul, she encountered a fairy, who proposed to exchange freedom for the fulfillment of three wishes. However, Alithea was very well-read and knew that stories involving wishes rarely had happy endings. The fairy then explained the reasons for this and recounted her own glorious past. Alithea was captivated by the fairy's story and ultimately made the most surprising wish.
