A young and inexperienced fairy godmother, Eleanor (played by Jillian Bell), learns that the profession of fairy godmother is in danger of disappearing. She decides to prove that people still need fairy godmothers and finds a letter from an unhappy 10-year-old girl, hoping to help her. However, when she tracks down the "little girl," Mackenzie (played by Isla Fisher), she discovers that Mackenzie is now a 40-year-old single mother whose life experiences have made her stop believing in the idea of a "happy life." Eleanor decides to help Mackenzie find happiness, whether Mackenzie likes it or not.
