Video information
Dickie Ecklund (played by Christian Bale) was once a famous boxer, but he fell into drug addiction and became dispirited. HBO came to film his documentary, faithfully documenting his life. Dickie pinned his boxing dreams on his brother Micky Ward (played by Mark Wahlberg), willingly serving as his sparring partner, while his mother Alice (played by Melissa Leo) acted as his manager. Micky was once a Golden Gloves boxer but is now just a construction worker, training hard to make a comeback. One day, Micky falls in love at first sight with Charlene (played by Amy Adams). With the help of ESPN, Micky competes against a fighter who weighs 20 pounds more than him and suffers a crushing defeat. In his anger and despair, it is Charlene who consoles him, and they begin a relationship. However, the family strongly opposes it. Meanwhile, Dickie gets arrested for impersonating a police officer to raise money for Micky, inadvertently involving Micky in legal trouble. From then on, the brothers become estranged, with the family supporting Dickie and Charlene supporting Micky. This deadlock continues until Micky competes again, when things start to change... Christian Bale and Melissa Leo won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, for their performances in this film.
