General Macbeth (Michael Fassbender) is the cousin of King Duncan of Scotland (David Thewlis). He has distinguished himself in battle, defending the kingdom against foreign enemies and suppressing rebellions. On his way back from a victorious campaign, he encounters three witches who prophesy that he will be promoted to higher ranks. This prophecy stirs ambition in Macbeth's heart. However, the witches also reveal that it will be the son of General Banquo (Paddy Considine) who will eventually inherit the throne. At the urging of his wife (Marion Cotillard), Macbeth kills King Duncan and ascends to the throne. To secure his position and keep his regicide a secret, Macbeth's hands become stained with blood. General Banquo, Macduff's wife (Elizabeth Debicki), and her children all fall victim to Macbeth's ruthless actions. As Macbeth becomes increasingly consumed by madness, he spirals further down a path of destruction.
