The story takes place in the bustling metropolis of New York, where life for the young girl Midge (played by Onata Aprile) is far from easy. Midge's mother, Susanna (played by Julianne Moore), is a washed-up rock star who, now older and less attractive, is constantly gloomy and consumed by anger. Susanna's husband, Bill (played by Steve Coogan), is a neurotic art dealer, and their marriage is already a sham. Both are unwilling to let go of Midge. As divorce seems inevitable, the custody battle for Midge becomes the top priority for both Susanna and Bill. To gain an advantage, they each find new partners—Lincoln (played by Alexander Skarsgård) and Margot (played by Joanna Vanderham)—to strengthen their respective positions. Within the family, everyone is engaged in a fight, but no one cares about Midge's true feelings, except for Lincoln and Margot.
