Cass (Johnny Depp) is obsessed with collecting rare and bizarre books. This talent impresses the wealthy Baron Balkan (Frank Langella), who assigns Cass a difficult task: to find an ancient book called "The Ninth Gate" and authenticate the one in his possession. Only three copies of this book exist in the world, with the other two having ended up in Portugal and France. Legend has it that reading the book in its entirety can summon the devil. Cass embarks on a convoluted and magical quest. He visits the widow of the book's original owner, a book restoration expert, and encounters a mysterious woman with green eyes. Along the way, his friend's sudden death mirrors an illustration in the book, and more murders follow. It seems that the book's curse will leave no one unscathed. If all three books are brought together, they will summon the evil Satan. Will the face of the devil ultimately appear?
