The film is a prequel to the 2008 movie *Death Race*. In a post-industrial era, various large private city prisons have been built, with the most infamous being "Dead Island" Prison. Carl, known as the "Cop Killer" (played by Luke Goss), is sent here to serve a life sentence. During the reign of Warden Jones (played by Lauren Cohan), who is determined to make a name for herself in the television industry, the government hands over the operation of the prison to Blue Company. In Blue's eyes, even prison cells can be profitable under the new commercial operating system. These prisoners are seen as perfect candidates for real-life, life-or-death sporting events. Broadcasting their fights and battles would surely be popular. Blue Company's carefully designed competition is "Death Race". Carl becomes a race car driver, willing to fight with many prison personnel for freedom, battling for freedom, but unaware that he is embarking on a legendary path.
