Larry Daley (played by Ben Stiller) seems to be having a rough time: frequently changing jobs, living from place to place; his wife has divorced him, married a stockbroker, and is about to remarry, leaving his position as a father in jeopardy. In an effort to save his life and gain custody of his son, Daley has to abandon his dream of "doing big things" and becomes a night guard at the New York Natural History Museum. Daley initially thought this would be a boring job, but on his first day, something incredible happened: the pharaoh's medallion in the museum possesses magical powers, and when night falls, all the specimens in the museum come to life, including a Tyrannosaurus Rex chasing after bones, mischievous monkeys, a tyrannical Hun king, and cave dwellers starting fires by drilling wood... causing chaos everywhere. With the help of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president, Daley finally manages to control the situation, but he soon faces a new problem: someone is after the pharaoh's medallion. Out of duty and to protect the museum's nighttime miracles, Daley has no choice but to step up and take action.
