Francisca Johnson (played by Meryl Streep) has passed away, and her will requests that her children scatter her ashes at the Rossmore Bridge. The confused children sort through her belongings and uncover a touching love story from her past. On a summer day in 1965, the housewife Francisca sees off her husband Richard (played by Jim Haynie) and their children, and she is left alone to do household chores. Photographer Robert Kincaid (played by Clint Eastwood) stumbles upon her and asks for directions to the Rossmore Bridge. Her calm heart is stirred, and she takes him to the bridge. After finishing her work that day, he gives her a bouquet of wildflowers as a thank-you and accepts her invitation to have dinner with her. The next morning, after he leaves, the reluctant Francisca returns to the Rossmore Bridge and pins a note on the bridge, inviting him to have dinner again. He accepts the invitation once more. They meet again at the Rossmore Bridge, and the flame of love ignites in both of their hearts. He asks her to leave with him, but she cannot bear to leave her current family and the happiness of the world. He leaves dejectedly. More than a decade later, Richard, who deeply loves Francisca, passes away. Three years later, she receives the news of Robert's death. He leaves most of his belongings to her and requests that his ashes be scattered at the Rossmore Bridge.
