The film is adapted from the classic novel of the same name written by Erich Maria Remarque. It tells the story of Paul Bäumer and his classmates, Leers and Müller, who joined the German National Volunteer Army during the First World War and were sent to the front lines to fight against the French army. On the battlefield, they witnessed thecruelty hunger, bloodshed, and death. The absurdity and ruthlessness of the war made Paul lose his enthusiasm for war and become disillusioned.
