When Zhongliang (Jackie Chan), who is orphaned, goes to live with his elder sister Xiuyi (He Sai Fei), who married into the Pang family, he is constantly bullied and humiliated by his brother-in-law. In a fit of rage, he uses opium to incapacitate his brother-in-law and flees to Shanghai, where he is accidentally recruited by the gangster boss Dada and becomes a "white party" member, using his charm to lure rich wives and extort their money. After the death of the head of the Pang family, the eldest daughter Ruyi (Gong Li) is appointed as the head of the household. To swindle the Pang family's wealth, Dada orders Zhongliang to return to the Pang family to seduce Ruyi. However, over time, Ruyi and Zhongliang develop genuine feelings for each other, and Zhongliang, unable to deceive Ruyi any longer, leaves Shanghai alone.
