The story is set in 1986, five years after *The Conjuring 3*. The Warrens, having suffered a heart attack due to Ed's experience with demonic activity in the third film, have officially retired and no longer engage in exorcism work. They still give lectures at universities, but even these opportunities are dwindling. Eventually, some events compel them to return to the field. This time, the central case is one of the most famous in the Warrens' career: the Smulls' haunting. According to the New England Society for Psychic Research (run by Judy and Tony Spera, the real-life daughter and son-in-law of Ed and Lorraine), in the 1970s, Janet and Jack Smull moved into a duplex in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Over the next few years, family members, including their daughter and Jack's parents, claimed to have experienced supernatural phenomena, ranging from strange odors and sounds to ghostly disturbances.
