Helen Harris (played by Kate Hudson) is deeply favored by the boss of a modeling agency. Beautiful and fashionable, she knows how to enjoy life. However, the sudden death of her sister Lindsay (played by Felicity Huffman) and her husband leaves three children—aged 15, 10, and 5—under Helen's care. Faced with the unfortunate children, Helen struggles to adjust to her changed life and tries her best to fulfill her role as a guardian. But she discovers that her previous busy work schedule and the long hours required to care for the children are in conflict, leading to her losing her beloved career. In dealing with and educating the children, she also encounters difficulties. At this point, Helen enrolls the children in the same school and is fortunate to receive help from the school's pastor, Dan (played by John Cusack), who helps her overcome her predicament. They also develop feelings for each other at this time. In the end, will Helen be able to fulfill her role as a guardian? And will her relationship with Dan be able to progress further?
