One of the Four Great Classical Novels of ancient China, *Journey to the West*, which has been adapted into movies and TV series in various forms, was unprecedentedly adapted by NBC in the United States and renamed *The Monkey King*. Since the show is based on *Journey to the West*, classic characters from the original novel, such as the Great Sage Equaling Heaven Sun Wukong, Sha Monk, Zhu Bajie, Tang Sanzang, and Guanyin, will all appear in the new version. Because the production is from an American TV network, and theScreenwriter and production staff are mostly American, even Zhu Bajie, Sha Monk, and Tang Sanzang have all been transformed into characters with blond hair and blue eyes. In Chinese TV and film works, Tang Sanzang, who is portrayed as almost rigidly serious, now appears in a modern pose, flirting with Guanyin. Bai Ling, a Chinese actress, plays Guanyin, while Russell Crowe, the actor known for *Gladiator*, takes on the role of Sun Wukong. The story of *The Monkey King* involves time travel, weaving together elements from different eras and cultures, so the series will feature numerous special effects, including action sequences. To enhance the action scenes, NBC has brought in Cinesite, which was responsible for the action effects in *Mission: Impossible II*, to handle the action design for the series!
