Sam (played by Tobey Maguire) goes to the prison to pick up his brother Tommy (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) after he is released. Upon returning home, their mother warmly welcomes them, but their father is sarcastic and critical. Sam, who is a U.S. Marine, is being deployed to Afghanistan, so this gathering is not only to welcome Tommy home but also to see Sam off. The father constantly compares the perfect Sam to the less-than-perfect Tommy, which angers Tommy and leads him to leave in a huff. Sam reluctantly bids farewell to his wife Grace (played by Natalie Portman) and their two daughters before heading off to the battlefield. Unfortunately, the Black Hawk helicopter he was on is shot down, and he is captured along with his subordinates. Terrified by the brutality of the Afghan thugs, Sam is forced to comply and personally kills one of his subordinates, which fills him with internal conflict. Back home, the family is informed that Sam has been killed, and they are plunged into grief. Tommy, who has woken up from his pain, resolves to change himself and gradually integrates into the family. Not only does the relationship between father and son improve, but he also develops a subtle emotional connection with Grace and the children. Just then, news arrives that Sam is still alive... This film is a remake of the 2004 film "Brotherhood."
