Beverly and Violet (played by Meryl Streep) are an elderly couple who maintain their marriage by relying on alcohol and drugs, respectively. One morning, Beverly leaves the house and never returns. Violet summons their three daughters and her niece and nephew-in-law to the house. The second daughter, Ivy, arrives, followed by the eldest daughter, Barbara (played by Julia Roberts), and her husband, Bill (played by Ewan McGregor), who bring their 14-year-old daughter from afar. Soon after, the bad news arrives: the police discover Beverly's body in the lake, and the cause of death is ruled as suicide. The youngest daughter, Karen, arrives at the funeral with her fiancé. At the dinner table after the funeral, Violet, who has overindulged in drugs, starts to lose her temper, and the daughters, each with their own concerns, feel uneasy. Barbara can no longer tolerate her mother's sharp tongue, and a loud argument erupts between them. The underlying conflicts and hidden truths within the family gradually come to light... This film is adapted from the eponymous play, with the original playwright Tracy Letts adapting it into a screenplay.
