In a small town in the American Midwest, doll maker Samuel Mullins (Anthony LaPaglia) and his wife Esther Mullins (Miranda Otto) live a happy and carefree life with their daughter Annabelle (Samara Lee). However, a sudden car accident takes Annabelle's life, plunging the Mullins family into darkness. Twelve years later, an old van arrives carrying Sister Charlotte (Stephanie Sigman) and her adopted children, and the Mullins house becomes their temporary orphanage. Samuel now appears somber.
