A 25-year-old man named César (played by Eduardo Noriega) inherits a fortune from his deceased parents, allowing him to live comfortably without worries. His frequent change of girlfriends gives him a reputation for being carefree among his circle of friends. However, recently, César has been pursued by a woman named Noria. To escape Noria, César seeks help from his friend's girlfriend, Sophia (played by Penélope Cruz). The story then shifts to a prison where a disfigured César is being held under suspicion of murder. A doctor named Antonio is trying to coax him into revealing the details of the incident. It turns out that Noria intercepted César outside Sophia's house, and a car accident during their journey resulted in César's disfigurement. César wakes up from a dream to find himself on a date with Sophia in the park, but he soon realizes that the park date was just a dream. The doctors are powerless to help with César's disfigurement, and shortly after, he signs an agreement in a daze. The hospital's new equipment miraculously restores César's appearance, but he discovers that Sophia is actually a fictional character he has created. César is unable to distinguish between dreams and reality and decides to team up with Antonio to uncover the truth. This film won multiple professional accolades, including the Tokyo Governor's Award at the 1998 Tokyo International Film Festival.
