The story takes place during the American Civil War. Mary (Addison Riecke), a student at a church school, accidentally encounters a severely injured Northern soldier, Michael Burns (Colin Farrell). Kind-hearted Mary brings Michael Burns back to the boarding school, without considering the potential threat his presence poses to the school, which is struggling to survive under the sole management of Miss Martha (Nicole Kidman). As the only male in the school, Michael Burns' arrival is like a stone dropped into calm water, creating ripples. Not only is the literature teacher, Edwina (Kirsten Dunst), unable to resist being attracted to him, but even the naive and budding young girl, Alicia (Elle Fanning), cannot suppress her inner restlessness.
