The story takes place in 17th-century France. The renowned landscape architect André (played by Matthias Schoenaerts) sees the talent of the female gardener Sabine (played by Kate Winslet) and decides to recommend her to oversee a grand project for King Louis XIV (played by Alan Rickman) to renovate the Palace of Versailles. At that time, being a female gardener was a highly discriminated profession, but Sabine pays no heed to the disapproving looks of others and silences them with her outstanding work. In the process, King Louis XIV falls in love with the intelligent and clever Sabine, but Sabine truly loves André, who is already married. Soon, Sabine's feelings are exposed, leading to numerous moral condemnations. Not only that, but Madame Le Nôtre (played by Helen McCrory), André's wife, swears to take revenge on Sabine.
