Young Marion Crane (played by Janet Leigh) works in Phoenix and is trusted by her employer, Lowery (played by Vaughn Taylor). Her boyfriend, Sam Loomis (played by John Gavin), owns a hardware store in Fairvale but is unable to remarry due to the need to pay off his father's debts and his ex-wife's alimony. He can only visit Marion occasionally during business trips. Marion is dissatisfied with this situation and, on a Friday afternoon, seizes the opportunity to abscond with $40,000 of company funds and drives away. However, Marion's escape does not go smoothly: she is first spotted by Lowery as she leaves the city, and early Saturday morning, she is suspected by the police. After spending $700 to exchange her old car for a new one, Marion continues her journey nervously. As night falls and heavy rain reduces visibility, making driving impossible, Marion decides to stop at the Bates Motel on the side of the road. The owner, Norman (played by Anthony Perkins), is very friendly and attempts to invite Marion to his house for dinner, but his aggressive mother rudely interrupts, forcing him to bring the meal to the motel's living room instead. Marion eats in the living room while conversing with Norman, eventually deciding to return to Phoenix on Sunday. After finishing her meal, Marion goes back to her room to bathe. At that moment, the shadow of an old woman suddenly appears in the bathroom...
