Brazilian lifeguard Donato (played by Wagner Moura) considers the sea his home. One day, when two German tourists are unexpectedly swept away by a strong current, Donato successfully rescues one of them, a man named Conrad (played by Clemens Schick). Unfortunately, Conrad's best friend is lost at sea. While searching along the current for the body, Donato and Conrad develop a close bond, and they eventually leave Brazil for Germany. Donato begins to adapt to life on land, until his younger brother Elton (played by Jesuíta Barbosa) grows up and flies to Berlin to confront his brother angrily for leaving without saying goodbye. However, Elton is soon also drawn to the foreign lifestyle...
