The Marquise de Merteuil (played by Glenn Close) and the notorious and flamboyant rake Lord Valmont (played by John Malkovich) are two friends in the world of love who use sex as a weapon to destroy each other's reputation and status. One day, Merteuil proposes that Valmont seduce the 16-year-old noblewoman Cécile (played by Uma Thurman), causing her to lose her innocence and ruin her reputation. However, Valmont finds this too lacking in challenge. Not only does he seduce the pure Cécile, but he also adds a bet to seduce the devout, beautiful, and chaste Madame Du Deuil (played by Michelle Pfeiffer). Eventually, Madame Du Deuil falls into his arms, and Valmont gradually falls genuinely in love with her. Merteuil becomes consumed by jealousy and hires her music teacher and new lover, Don Sérif (played by Keanu Reeves), to take revenge for her. As a result, Valmont dies in a duel with Don Sérif, Madame Du Deuil dies of heartbreak, and Merteuil's reputation is ruined.
