In the second episode, Neo (played by Keanu Reeves) fails to destroy the "Matrix" from within. His body falls into a coma on a real-world spaceship, while his mind is trapped in a liminal space between the "Matrix" and the real world, controlled by the "Trainman." Morpheus (played by Laurence Fishburne) and Trinity (played by Carrie-Anne Moss), among others, learn of Neo's situation. Under the guidance of a guardian angel, they find the Trainman's controller, Merovingian, and after a fierce battle, rescue Neo. Meanwhile, the electronic squid forces launch a fierce attack on Zion, and the human organization mobilizes all its mechanized warriors for a fierce resistance, with the situation hanging in the balance. Neo and Trinity pilot a spaceship through numerous difficulties to reach the machine city, where Neo finally meets the ruler of the machine world, the "Machine Emperor." They negotiate and reach an agreement: Neo will eliminate Smith, who is not controlled by the "Matrix," in exchange for peace in Zion. Within the "Matrix," Neo and Smith engage in their final, life-or-death duel.
