Wong Jingwei (played by Eric Tsang) is a Hong Kong director from the 1990s who is considered avant-garde, but he greatly disdains the Cantonese films of the 1960s. Unexpectedly, he travels back in time to the 1960s, where he is informed by the legendary director Chu Yuan that he can return to his own time only if he makes a popular film during that era. Although Wong Jingwei is extremely reluctant, he meets Li Chi (played by Lawrence Cheng) and Xie Yuan (played by Anthony Wong), who are struggling actors before they become famous. Due to his unique identity, he helps the two achieve instant fame. Both Li Chi's and Xie Yuan's girlfriends, Bao Zhu (played by Cecilia Cheung) and Fang Fang (played by Shu Qi), fall in love with Wong Jingwei, admiring his talent. Upon learning of this, Li Chi and Xie Yuan cut off all contact with Wong Jingwei. However, the films Wong Jingwei makes are completely unappreciated. Will he be able to return to his own time?
