Video information
Qi Xun (played by Han Shi Gui) is an outstanding police officer whose life can be described as flourishing. He has a promising future and two women who deeply love him: one is his elegant, gentle, and virtuous wife, Xiu Xian (played by Yan Zhi Yuan), and the other is his alluring mistress, Jia Xi (played by Li Yin Zhu). One day, he receives a task to investigate the murder of a photo studio owner. The deceased's wife, Qing Xi (played by Cheng Xian E), is suspected of the crime, but this woman exudes a peculiar, decadent charm that makes him feel she is unfathomable. Qi Xun quickly becomes obsessed with Qing Xi. Meanwhile, his life takes a turn. His wife Xiu Xian is pregnant, and Qi Xun wants to break things off with his mistress Jia Xi, but he finds himself unable to let go. Jia Xi, though outwardly glamorous, is inwardly extremely lonely, relying solely on Qi Xun's love as her life'spillar. When Qi Xun proposes to end their relationship, she immediately plunges into despair and pain. On the other hand, Xiu Xian seems unaware of everything happening around her and keeps a secret in her heart. In front of his wife Xiu Xian, Qi Xun is a caring husband; while on duty, he is a tough, even ruthless, police officer; in front of his mistress Jia Xi, he is a passionate lover; and in front of the suspect Qing Xi, he is an ambiguous man. However, as the secrets of the three women are gradually revealed, the truth that unfolds before them is utterly shocking. Behind the scenes: Director Bian He's works tend towards European styles, and the title of this film comes from the famous novel "The Scarlet Letter," which also hints at the director's creative preferences. Therefore, his film style is quite different from that of other Korean directors. In this movie, the director remains faithful to mainstream film techniques while incorporating subtle changes, using the emotional changes of the characters to connect a series of events like a maze. The resulting work is not merely a suspenseful crime film but delves deeper to tell a story about the frustration of desire. The film's cinematography is highly skilled, with the transition of light and shadow and the contrast of colors creating a bizarre and cruel world of love and desire. The delicate visual quality will provide viewers with an aesthetic experience. It is also worth mentioning the actors' outstanding performances. The acting of the film star Han Shi Gui goes without saying and can be set aside for now, but at the age of 23, Li Yin Zhu maturely portrayed the character of Jia Xi, and her proficient performance is surprising. However, this talented actor left the world prematurely due to depression, and "The Scarlet Letter" became her final work, leaving film fans with endless regret.
