What makes a person truly unique? The movie focuses on Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx), a middle school music teacher who gets the opportunity of a lifetime: to play at the best jazz club in New York. But a small mistake sends him from the streets of New York to a magical place called "the Great Before," where souls receive training and gain their personality traits and interests before heading to Earth. Determined to return to Earth, Joe meets a precocious soul named "22" (voiced by Tina Fey), who has never found her interest in the human experience. As Joe tries to show 22 the wonders of life, he also discovers answers to some of life's ultimate questions.
