Little May's mother was hospitalized due to illness, so her father took her and her four-year-old sister, Little Mei, to live in the countryside. They found the environment there very novel and discovered many interesting things. They encountered many little elves, who brought them to their own world, where they saw many strange things. They also became friends with a big, plump Totoro. Totoro and the elves used their magical powers to create many wondrous landscapes for Little May and her sister, opening their eyes to new wonders. Little Mei often worried about her sick mother and insisted that her sister take her to visit her, but Little May refused. Little Mei went by herself, only to get lost along the way. Little May had no choice but to seek help from her Totoro and little elf friends.
