After his parents' divorce, the teenage boy Kai (voiced by Shohta Shitanda) moved back to his seaside hometown with his father and began a new life with his grandfather, who makes umbrellas for a living. The family upheaval left Kai feeling down, but he found a little joy in composing music. Yubu (voiced by Nanami Tami) and Kuni (voiced by Sōma Kazama) discovered Kai's musical talent and warmly invited him to join their band, "Siren." One night, Kai's music attracted a mermaid named Ryo (voiced by Kana Hanasaki), and they quickly became friends. However, in the village, mermaids are seen as an omen of misfortune, and their appearance often foretells disaster and death. Eventually, Ryo's identity was revealed, and the villagers quickly divided into two factions: one captivated by Ryo's innocent dancing, and the other determined to drive the mermaid out of the human world.
