Satoru Fujinuma (voiced by Shinichi Mitsuishi) possesses the extraordinary ability to return to the past. His mother, Sakiko (voiced by Minami Takayama), was murdered, and his once-trusted friend, Jun Shiratori (voiced by Daiyu Mizushima), is about to be executed as the true culprit in a series of child murders. At this critical moment, Satoru suddenly returns to 1988, back to the elementary school he attended. At that time, his classmates, Kageyo Hatsu (voiced by Aoi Yūki) and Hiromi Yamada (voiced by Akari Ono), who were killed in the murder cases, had not yet been victimized. Satoru resolves to use his abilities to protect Kageyo and Hiromi's safety, clear Jun Shiratori's name, and uncover the true mastermind behind the crimes. With his efforts, the initially withdrawn and solitary Kageyo finally opens up to him, and they form a deep friendship. Soon, the day of the crime arrives. After the long, dark night passes, when the light returns, will Satoru be able to see Kageyo's innocent smile once again?
