Video information

The film tells the moving story of 29-year-old Japanese journalist Shiori Ito, who claims she was raped by then Tokyo Broadcasting System Washington Bureau Chief Keishi Yamaguchi, a biographer of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, during a work dinner in 2015. However, Yamaguchi strongly denies the allegations. Despite reporting the incident to the police, Ito was asked to re-enact the alleged rape using a life-sized doll, and the case was eventually dropped after a year-long investigation. When Ito made the unprecedented decision to publicly disclose her accusations and reveal her identity, she faced public humiliation and hate mail. The film uniquely documents Ito's journey over the course of a year following its release. While the global MeToo movement has encouraged women worldwide to publicly share their allegations of sexual assault, the response in Japan has been relatively muted. Undeterred, Ito visited the institutions she believed had failed her and met other women who were too afraid to speak out. The film weaves Ito's story into the broader social context of Japan, where until 2017, the minimum sentence for rape was shorter than that for theft.
