Video information

In December 2003, the Chinese Department of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou staged a public performance of "The Vagina Monologues." From then on, this feminist play from the United States, which aims to eliminate gender-based violence, ignited a "vagina fire" in mainland China. The Zhihe Society of Fudan University in Shanghai, the Shanghai Beaver Society, and the Beijing Bcome group, among others, performed the play in various ways. They staged it in schools, small theaters, coffee shops, on the streets, and even in the subway. "The Vagina Monologues" also acquired its own Chinese names: "Vagina Cloudy," "The Way of the Vagina," and "Vagina Monologues to the End." All these names retained the word that is considered harsh by the public—vagina. "Vagina, I said it," is both a process of speaking out and a process of action; it is a process of self-awakening and moving into public space; it is a process of learning and understanding, as well as a process of localization. Ten years later, we revisit the "vagina" theme, asking the participants from back then and observing the current activists, listening to the voices from the "vagina."
