Video information

At 1:23 a.m. on April 26, 1986, a loud explosion was heard from the Ukrainian region of the Soviet Union, as colorful flames shot thousands of meters into the sky. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant had exploded, marking the largest nuclear disaster in human history since the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The accident resulted in the immediate death of 31 people, and the subsequent severe nuclear leakage led to the deaths of thousands of residents or caused them to fall ill. To this day, there are still cases of deformed fetuses being born due to the effects of radiation. The firefighters who were on the scene that day paid the ultimate price with their lives and health to prevent a secondary explosion at the nuclear power plant. However, what is shocking is that the Soviet government chose to suppress and keep the accident information confidential, completely disregarding the fact that the radioactive dust had already leaked into the atmosphere and spread to Eastern Europe, and even to the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe... The documentary uses photographs taken by photographers at the time and archival footage to re-enact the tense large-scale operation that took place at the Chernobyl accident site, recreating each stage of the rescue efforts.
