Danny Balint (played by Ryan Gosling), a Jewish youth living in New York, was once a top student at a Hebrew school. However, during his studies, he began to question the Old Testament and the faith of his own people. His doubts left the school administration at a loss, and he was eventually expelled. From then on, Danny developed hatred for his fellow Jews. He consciously began to associate with neo-Nazi groups and eventually became a member of the Ku Klux Klan... The film is based on a true story. The prototype for the male lead, Dan Burros, joined both the American neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan. After his Jewish identity was exposed by a journalist, Dan committed suicide. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and the Best Foreign Language Film Actor Award at the 2001 Russian Film Critics Association (for Ryan Gosling).
