Video information

"Ruling" explores six domains of the relationship between humans and animals through drone footage, hidden cameras, and handheld cameras: companion animals, wildlife, research, entertainment, clothing, and food. It questions the morality and correctness of human dominance over animals. The film has undoubtedly become one of the most notable documentaries of 2018, with a production team bolstered by the director of "Earthlings," Shaun Monson, and a narration team featuringHeavyweight stars such as Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara. After watching the film, some viewers have called it "Earthlings for a new generation." In the director's view, "ruling" means one group exerting control, power, or authority over another, with the rulers believing they have the right to do so. Such a belief often stems from a sense of superiority and the notion that "might makes right." Through the film, the director challenges some common misconceptions in society, such as "animals are inferior" and "humans have the right to do as they please with animals." Additionally, the director briefly explores how human superiority complexes can complement some of humanity's darkest ideologies, and viewers will see the similarities between racism, sexism, and speciesism. Director Chris Delfosse's 2014 film, "Lucent," served as a precursor to "Ruling."
